Lucky for all of you that the groundskeeper at the Delaware County Fairgrounds is as crazy excited about the course design and destruction as the course designer himself! Can’t wait to see what the two of them come up with – they even have the same first name!
This year’s Delaware race will be completely enclosed – meaning it will take place INSIDE the county fairgrounds as an actual event at the fair. Yes, this means that you must pay to get in (racers are free with paid registration) and family members (ages 9 and older) are just a mere $5 for the whole day at the fair! Go to thier website http://www.delawarecountyfair.com/ to check out all the events happening all week long AND after the race on Saturday. The PHITathalon staff has decided not to charge for parking and we have priced the registration fee for the race to reflect the additional expense for family members. We feel this is an awesome way for friends and family to enjoy watching this event up close and personal. There are plenty of benches near obstacles for those who don’t want to walk the entire course to view participants as they traverse through the course.
We are looking forward to this year’s race….can’t wait to see you there!

For the second year in a row, the PHITathalon has brought together participants all seeking the same thing: an incredibly challenging, muddy, fun obstacle course-type race! Leaping over walls and sliding down wet, muddy tarps was just part of the amazing race over 260 participants took on in Marysville. Creek beds, mud pits and darkened mud crawls made it necessary for race organizers to incorporate the strength of fire hoses to clear the mud from every part of their bodies. Some finished with mud-filled socks and shoes or with only one of each, but everyone finished and everyone had fun!
The behind-the-scenes coordination, done only by a handful of people, was as challenging at times as the race itself. With help from our sponsors and support from friends, the PHITathalon organizers worked hard to create a course that will challenge the racer, yet was still able to be completed by those at all different fitness levels.
Other challenges involved coordinating with new groups and organizations to broaden the experience for the families of those who participated. Many hours were spent designing the course and locating and purchasing materials to have the obstacles created. As the course took on its form, endless adjustments and last minute changes were tweaked and ironed out amongst staff and volunteers alike. All of the people involved with the PHITathalon were 100% committed to bringing you the best experience possible! While most of those new endeavors went really well, others did not. We are working those kinks out and look forward to the smoothest experience and the most challenging course ever!
Likewise, this year’s Inaugural PHITathalon in Delaware, Ohio will be an experience for everyone who comes out! The staff has chosen to keep the obstacles and the course under wraps until the unveiling…the day of the race. We hope this insures the integrity of the course and its perils. The action will be similar to that of the Marysville race with a few changes.
Only the top three OVERALL finishers will receive medals at this race. Traditionally, September is much cooler than July, so we are looking for faster completion times. Another change is that the Delaware County Fair is making this an actual event at their fair! So in addition to the entire event being held within the grounds, this is exciting to us because there will be even more spectators to cheer everyone on – and may inspire those watching to become participants in the next PHITathalon! As with any event the fairgrounds holds (tractor pulls, demolition derby, horse racing, etc.) admission into the fair must be paid. This year’s admission price is $5 for adults and $5 for children 8 years old and older. All kids under age 8 are admitted free. YOU MUST PAY ADMISSION INTO THE DELAWARE COUNTY FAIR in order to see this race! We kept the registration costs lower than normal (just $45 until the day of the race and then $55 on race day) to offset this expense. Please come prepared – we will be providing course maps to those entering the gates. This will enable spectators to view the race up close and personal and to choose from where they view the race! This is an exciting way for spectators to see first-hand the depth of the challenges and muddy fun everyone experiences.
We believe these changes will be positive ones, helping everyone experience the PHITathalon in a very personal way! While the obstacles won’t be announced, we hope the anticipation will be enough to drawn you in! Register today for the 1st Annual PHITathalon at the Delaware County fairgrounds…we will see you at the fair!
